slipstreaming service-pack-2 in with xp install

Apr 8, 01:07 PM

the problem: got a blue screen when installing xp:

“a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer”
“pci.sys” blah blah blah

the problem is the computer has hardware that is too new for win-xp. so the strategy is to create a boot disk that has xp-service-pack-two built right in!

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp

basically, we COPY out xp to a directory, extract the contents of xp-sp2 to another directory, MERGE the two, use IsoBuster to “extract” out the boot image, and use nero to create the boot.

exact steps:

(assuming this is being all done on the F: drive)

1) go to a lightly used disk and create a directory called “xp”.
2) load the xp disk (dont run it)
3) copy all the stuff from the xp disk to the new xp directory
4) create a directory called “sp2”
5) copy the service pack two into that new sp2 directory
6) in the sp2 directory, run this command: xpsp2.exe -x:F:\sp2 this will “extract” the executable into the sp2 directory
7) cd into the “i386” directory
8) cd into the “update” directory
9) enter the following command: update -s:F:\xp this will “merge” the service-pack-two into the xp directory
10) using ISOBuster, extract the Microsoft Corporation.img file
11) using nero, create a “bootable disk” using the .img file from above
12) set the LABEL NAME identically to the original xp boot disk (WXPVOL_EN)
13) set EXPERT—>NO-EMULATION, and NUMBER-OF-LOADED-SECTORS to 4
14) burn!
15) boot!
